Human microbes are picky about neighbourhoods on body

The first map of the bugs living on the human body shows that, for microbes, it’s all about location. To explore what shapes the body’s bacterial communities, Elizabeth Costello at the University of Colorado in Boulder and colleagues sampled 18 sites on eight people for four months. Previously, it was unclear how important location is – compared with, say, variation between people – for promoting certain bacteria. The team also inoculated “plots” on the volunteers’ foreheads and arms with bacteria transplanted from elsewhere on the body. Tongue bugs thrived on the forearm, but not the forehead,
